Preparing Your Home for Summer Travel

With the school year ending and many families preparing to travel, we encourage residents to take a few simple steps to help protect their homes while away:

Unplug non-essential electrical appliances.

• Check for water leaks and turn off water supply valves where appropriate.

• Ensure doors, windows, and gates are securely locked.

• Dispose of perishable food and household waste.

• Clear drains and gutters to prepare for the rainy season.

• Secure outdoor furniture and loose items that may be affected by strong winds.

• Avoid leaving valuable items visible from windows.

Residents who plan to be away for an extended period are also encouraged to notify the Nichada Security Office of their travel dates by emailing security@nichada.com. This information helps our security team maintain awareness of unoccupied properties and respond more effectively if any concerns arise.

A few minutes of preparation before departure can help prevent unexpected issues and provide peace of mind during your holiday.

We wish all residents a safe and enjoyable summer break.

Understanding "Sarcopenia" (Age-Related Muscle Loss)

In medical terms, the natural loss of muscle mass, strength, and function as we age is called Sarcopenia (usually becoming noticeable after age 50–60). It leads to difficulty standing up, slower walking, poor balance, and a significantly higher risk of falls and fractures.

How to Prevent Muscle Wasting

  1. Stay Active: Avoid sitting or lying down for prolonged periods during the day.
  2. Eat Enough Protein: Consume fish, eggs, beans, and tofu to help repair and rebuild muscle tissue.
  3. Exercise regularly: This is the single most effective way to slow down and reverse muscle loss.

3 Essential Types of Exercise for Seniors

According to research, a combination of these three exercise types delivers the best results:

  1. Resistance Training (To Build Muscle Mass):
  • Examples: Lifting light dumbbells or water bottles, using resistance bands, or doing chair squats. (Recommended 2–3 times a week).
  1. Aerobic Exercise (For Heart & Lung Health):
  • Examples: Brisk walking, water aerobics, stationary cycling, and low-impact aerobics (just like our Soft Beats class!).
  1. Balance Training (To Prevent Falls):
  • Examples: Single-leg stands (holding a chair for support), heel-to-toe walking, Tai Chi, or gentle yoga.

Important Precautions for Seniors: Always start with simple, low-impact movements and a comfortable, unhurried musical beat to protect joints and knees. Most importantly, never skip a proper warm-up before and a cool-down stretch after every session.
